Chemotaxis in Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

A chemotaxis system for Pseudomonas aeruginosa was defined by using the method of Adler. Cells were attracted to compounds in the order ammonium chloride greater than amino acids greater than organic acids. Two sugars were assayed and elicited no response. Comparisons with other model systems are discussed.

Chemotaxis by Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Chemotaxis by Pseudomonas aeruginosa RM46 has been studied, and conditions required for chemotaxis have been defined, by using the Adler capillary assay technique. Several amino acids, organic acids, and glucose were shown to be attractants of varying effectiveness for this organism. Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid was absolutely required for chemotaxis, and magnesium was also necessary for a m...

Chemotaxis to oligopeptides by Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

A number of peptides were evaluated as chemoattractants for Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Several strains recognized tri-, tetra-, penta-, and hexapeptides in a capillary tube assay. Tripeptides altered at the carboxyl terminus were good attractants, whereas tripeptides altered at the amino terminus did not serve as chemoattractants. Methionine-containing peptides were relatively poor attractants. Ar...

Chemotaxis away from thiocyanic and isothiocyanic esters in Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Negative chemotaxis, the movement of organisms away from chemicals, was investigated in Pseudomonas aeruginosa using a rapid videotape method. Digital image processing was used to detect changes in bacterial numbers near the mouth of a capillary containing a test chemical. P. aeruginosa was found to be repelled by thiocyanic and isothiocyanic esters including allyl isothiocyanate, ethyl thiocya...

Chemotaxis proteins and transducers for aerotaxis in Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

It was previously shown that the chemotaxis gene cluster 1 (cheYZABW) was required for chemotaxis. In this study, the involvement of the same cluster in aerotaxis is described and two transducer genes for aerotaxis are identified. Aerotaxis assays of a number of deletion-insertion mutants of Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 revealed that the chemotaxis gene cluster 1 and cheR are required for aerota...
